Medial Axis and Haptics

The Medial Axis, being the set of centers of all maximally inscribed spheres in a solid, is widely used for skeletal extraction, pattern recognition and object representation. Using the Medial Axis Transform for dynamic modeling of 3-D free form objects is a rather new approach. The modeling of solids by editing the underlying Medial Axis with its associated radii and the computation of the corresponding boundary of the solid including curvature data is one of the main goals in this work.

Moreover, to give an aid in the modeling process the integration of haptic is introduced. Therefore, understanding the human sense of touch and the appropriate stimulation utilizing the PHANToM haptic device are further topics treated here.
